Kloof Street’s favourite neighbourhood eatery has once again been acknowledged with One Star at the annual Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards ceremony held on 31 March at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town.
“Winning this award for the second year is a testament to the incredible team at Upper Union,” says executive chef Amori Burger. “It’s a tribute and acknowledgement of our shared commitment to crafting bold, vibrant flavours that bring people together. For nearly 30 years, the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards has set the standard for South African culinary excellence by honouring the visionary chefs and dedicated teams who deliver unforgettable experiences.
The one-star rating from the Eat Out Restaurant Awards signifies excellence in the South African restaurant industry. It recognises restaurants that deliver exceptional quality in their offerings, including food, service, ambiance, and innovation. This prestigious accolade highlights establishments that consistently provide memorable dining experiences and demonstrate a commitment to culinary artistry.
Over 690 restaurants were visited by the eight Eat Out judges, and just 56 made the final nomination list for one, two or three Eat Out Stars. The judges review restaurants in terms of consistency, attention to detail, quality ingredients, skilful preparation and delivery of flavourful dishes. The judges also take into consideration innovation, and those chefs and restaurants who are exploring a forward-thinking and progressive approach. “We are grateful for every single person who has visited Upper Union since we opened. It’s an honour to keep creating beautiful moments for our guests and team at the Green House,” Amori adds.
